The nation's stunning new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has ended up in the center of regional political struggles during the week it was scheduled to – but was unable – to open its doors to the visitors for the initial occasion.

The Major Initiative

The large-scale campus sits in the center of Benin City, administrative center of the southern region of Edo – and features an excavation site and structures planned by renowned British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, best known for the Washington African American Museum that was inaugurated in Washington in 2016.

It has been 60 months in the development – and is designed to showcase both the history and the present of creativity in the region renowned for the Benin Bronzes, historical pieces taken from the royal palace by British soldiers in the 1800s.

Preparation and Promise

It is impressive – and before the scheduled opening, Mowaa was energetic with staff committed to show it is a institution that can rival renowned museums and galleries in the Europe and America.

Inside conservators meticulously unwrapped cultural items from protective packaging, examining each piece and taking detailed documentation before placing them on display surfaces and stands.

Experts fine-tuned environmental controls. In the research lab, staff members calibrated instruments designed to preserve historical artefacts.

Financial Backing and Economic Vision

The initiative has been the concept of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho – now Mowaa's managing director.

"I want us to have a substantial financial effect on communities in this region," he stated to journalists, mentioning that he hoped to make Benin City "a cultural destination."

Mowaa, a charitable local organization, aims at establishing in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and adding over $80m each year to the area arts sector through partnerships and programming.

Investment and Administrative Problems

It has needed $25m to get here – money raised from multiple contributors, including the international partners, the London institution and the Edo state government.

But now the local government has pulled the rug from beneath it – revoking the utilization of the site on which the building was erected.

An official representative clarified this was because in the original paperwork it had referred to itself as EMOWAA – and it had later removed "Edo" from its designation.

Protests and Political Intervention

This statement came after protests on Sunday, when activists invaded the campus demanding it be designated the Benin Royal Museum.

A rowdy crowd insulted overseas dignitaries at the facility prior to the launch – compelling them to be hurried away under official guard.

President Bola Tinubu has also intervened to try and resolve the conflict, establishing a special task force to manage the situation.

Governance Issues

But in what way has this become so divisive – and such a public relations crisis?

The majority of it results from internal conflicts at a local state level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki – whose governance finished recently – who was a major backer of the museum.

And it seems the government of the new governor, a strong supporter of the area king, referred to as the royal figure, may seek greater involvement in the project. The demonstrators on the weekend, for instance, were demanding that the facility be positioned under the authority of Oba Ewuare II.

The Benin Bronzes Controversy

This highlights the contentious issue of the historical artworks, one of Africa's most renowned artistic heritage.

Because though the facility does ultimately begin operations, these objects will be noticeably missing.

They are metal, elephant tusk and wooden sculptures that once adorned the king's residence of the ancient kingdom before colonial troops looted them in the colonial era during a punitive expedition.

Today, thousands remain distributed across galleries in Europe and North America -- including the British Museum, German museum and the New York institution.

Return Initiatives

Their homecoming has become one of the most contested debates in the worldwide cultural sector. Roughly 150 have presently made their way home – and further are scheduled to be repatriated.

When plans for the institution in Benin City were originally proposed in recent years, the key players on Nigeria's art scene expected it would become their natural home – a modern facility to show them off to the international community.

But the waters were muddied recently after the national authorities stated that the royal leader would be the proper guardian of returned objects – and the palace campaigned for a facility under the royal family's direct control, contrary to the desires of the former governor.
